The 2050 Terminal on Sydney-harbour is a social condenser that seeks to dismantle the modes of transportation in the metropolitan city, and link these components to generate a machine in a post-labour society that shapes “The World of Tomorrow”. This project will be testing the limits of physical mobility in a world where the socio-political configuration of the society allows individuals to spend the majority of their time as leisure.
Our project highlights the dissonance created by the waiting-paradox of time: on a site where, on one hand, some users are set to leave, but are obliged to wait, and on the other hand, some are embracing the physical mobile activities which take over the site. This project is a symbolic exploration of distinctive set of social encounters which investigates new forms of social habits in what will be known as a light rail and ferry terminal.
This terminal becomes a showcase of social activities happening on site and the bay itself. When mostly everything is controlled by technological activities, 2050 tries to rejuvenate the importance of human interaction and of physical exercise. Upon arrival at the 2050 terminal, you are given a set of choices regarding your movement and activity within the precinct. The choices of where you want to go are then met with the choices of how you get there, the machine behind the building supplies and maintains an array of vehicle parts that are constantly circulating on a conveyer belt that extends throughout the whole terminal. The terminal passenger is then triggered to wait for the numbered box which contains different vehicle arts each, to create and assemble a new type of transport mean in the dedicated workshop spaces of the building.

The visitor’s circulation in the building tends to be interrupted sometimes by the constant passing of the light rail that extends to the harbour via the underground Wynyard tunnel. The ferry terminal is set out from the shoreline accessible either by water or an elevated panoramic walkway that rewards its physical challenge with a unique experience of the harbour unattainable elsewhere. The walkway wraps around the bay creating a pool that uses Grapheme filtering to create clean water for visitors to swim through or experience on their created vehicles.

The Terminal of Subtle ineffeciencies also tries to portray the movement of water within the building. As rain hits the landscape roof of this infrastructure, it eventually waters the lush of plants found in specific areas while all the extra rainfall gets stored in tanks below the roof. This water system is visible and fetishizes the machine typology which also helps narrate the scenario of the moving filtered water whitin the pipes above the waiting passengers of the terminal.
When the tanks are filled, and are about to overflow/or when it’s extremely hot, the stored filtered water drips like rainfall in the swimming pool creating a cinematic experience of this new typology.

2050: The terminal of Subtle ineffeciencies is there to experiment the new forms of social rituals that are set to happen in a waiting terminal scenario in a radical format of a world without jobs.

What will be Tested? And How?
2050 is there to experiment the new forms of social rituals that are set to happen in a waiting terminal scenario in a radical format of a worldwithout jobs. The building will be testing the limits of physical mobility in a world where the socio-political configuration of the society allows individualsto spend the majority of their time as leisure by introducing the user to multiple choices, and therefore challenge the mainstreamtransportation habits of Sydney-siders of the post-work era.
Who will attend and what will be their role?
The general public who seek to use the extension of the Circular Quay Light rail are the main users of this building. Their main role is to be challenged by the various physical activities offered and to participate in the test of interacting socially with others.
Why is this type of Social Condenser relevant today?
The 2050 Social Condenser is a machine that tends to remind users of human interactions that are set to form when conventional habits arebeing challenged in a world where technology is the most communicative form of cooperation, communication, and transportion, etc...
Where?
Circular Quay, Sydney, NSW
How will your site implementation respond to your premise?
The manipulation of our site to to precedent the fluid motion of water which is translated into the facade becomes a strong driving point forour premise. This manipulation is carried throughout the entire wharf and waterline, reshaping its typology in line with our premise. Our site also features a plethora of access points, both on land and from the sea, creating an inviting area for visitors.
When will it operate? Will it have different opening hours? How often will participants come and how long will they stay?
As a public transport terminal, the building will operate according to NSW transport opening hours from 5 am to 12 am. Vehicle hire will be available between 9 am to 5 pm.The amount of visitors and the duration of the visit to the building will vary according to the choices taken by the user on the premises of the 2050 light rail and ferry terminal. The interaction of the users with the facilities of 2050 is “to be determined”, since the social condenser itself tests the paradox of time, movement, and social interactions in a post-labor scene.
